All Care Living Assistance Services
The term relates to a deep physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that builds when you give care for a long time without enough rest. Ordinary tiredness fades after a good night of sleep or a quiet weekend. Burnout stays with you.
Family caregiver stress is often part of it, and that stress rarely switches off, even when you are off duty. Many people also feel guilty for being worn out, which makes the load heavier.
The signs usually show up in these four parts of daily life:
Constant fatigue, poor sleep, frequent headaches, or getting sick more often.
Feeling hopeless, irritable, numb, or dreading the day ahead.
Dropping hobbies, skipping meals, or struggling to focus.
Pulling away from friends, snapping at family, or feeling resentment toward the person you care for.
Use this list as a prompt for reflection. If several of these feel familiar and have lasted more than a few weeks, talk with your own doctor about how you are doing.
Many family caregivers wait a long time to ask for support, and the reasons make sense. Guilt is a big one, because handing off any care can feel like letting your parent down.
Cultural expectations play a part too. In many New York families, caring for parents at home is a point of pride and a duty passed down through generations.
Cost worries are another issue. Families often assume professional care is out of reach without checking what options exist.
The coverage section below explains where to start.
Respite care is short-term care that gives the family caregiver time away. It takes place in your loved one’s home, so their routine stays familiar. Think of it as temporary home care for a parent while you rest.
At All Care Living Assistance Services, our respite care in the Bronx follows three steps:
Support can include help with bathing and dressing, meals, walking, moving from bed to chair, medication reminders and companionship. Whenever possible, the same caregiver comes for each respite shift, and registered nurses at All Care supervise our caregivers.
Note: Families in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Westchester can arrange respite care with us.
The best time to consider respite care is before you reach a breaking point. Some moments make it especially worthwhile. You may have gone weeks without a full day off. You may be missing your own appointments, or dreading each morning.
Planned events count too, such as a work trip, a family occasion or a medical visit of your own. Regular respite, even a few hours each week, gives you time to sleep, see friends or sit in a quiet room. Small breaks add up, and they keep caregiver burnout from building.
Coverage depends on your loved one’s insurance and Medicaid status. Medicaid managed long term care plans may include respite benefits, and each plan sets its own rules.
Some families pay privately, especially for short or occasional breaks. If you are unsure which path fits, we can walk you through your options, including Medicaid questions.
Our social work team can also help families find resources and speak up for the support they need.
Respite care is one piece of caregiver support in New York. NYC Aging, the city’s Department for the Aging, connects caregivers with community programs. These offer information and referrals, long term care planning, support groups, counseling, training and respite care.
To find a program near you, call Aging Connect, the NYC Aging helpline, or use the Services Finder on its website.
Support groups let you talk with people who understand the daily strain. Adult day programs give your loved one a place to spend the day with activities and company while you work or rest.
Start with the people who share the load. Tell them plainly how you have been feeling, and ask for specific help, such as covering a weekend or going to a doctor’s appointment.
Then talk with your loved one at a time that works for you both. Explain that a break helps you keep showing up for them, and let them have a say in the schedule. A short first visit while you are home can make the change feel gentler.
